One of the most memorable
games in the history of pro
football was the 1968
Superbowl.
The Jets, coached by Weeb
Ewbank beat the heavily
favored Baltimore Colts. Prior
to the merger of the AFL and
the NFL in 1970, the American
Football League was
considered a much inferior
organization than the
established
National Football League.
The '68 Superbowl game
generated a great deal of
national attention after QB Joe
Namath
guaranteed that the Jets
would win the game. The
media became
greatly amused by Namath's
brash prediction.
After all, the Jets were not
considered a
contender to actually win the
game. The logic being,
though they boasted a good
11-3 record, it was against a
much
easier, entirely AFL schedule.
Namaths prediction was
correct however, and to the
amazement of the huge
television audience who
viewed the game, New York
beat the Colts 16-7. Recent
Jets teams have not faired as
well, though the 1986 Joe
Walton squad was considered
an elite team. The roster
included NFL greats like Kyle
Clifton, Mark Gastineau,
Freeman McNeil, Al Toon,
Wesley Walker and QB Ken
O'Brien. Thank you for
