The Philadelphia Eagles had
little to be enthusiastic about
for many years after their
exhibition season. In 1978
however, one play seemed to
change the fate of the
beleagured franchise. In the
meadowlands on November
19th, the Giants had the
Eagles right where they
wanted them. They led 17-12
in the 4th Quarter with a
few seconds left. All the
Giants had
to do was snap the ball and
run out the clock, but the
unexpected happened. QB Joe
Piscarcik
attempted a handoff instead
of kneeling on the ball
and a fumble was the result.
A shocked crowd
and television audience
watched in amazement as
Herman Edwards scooped up
the fumble and raced the
distance.
Coach Dick Vermeil's squad
capitalized on the good
fortune of that win and
used the momentum swing as
a catalyst. That single play
seemed to turn the
Philadelphia Eagles into a
winner. Culminating in a
Superbowl appearance in '80
the Eagles had a record of
35-18 in
the next 3 years. NFL Greats
on
that roster were Bill Bergey,
Harold
Carmichael, Ron Jaworski,
and Wilbert Montgomery.
Andy Reid has put together
yet another
championship run recently
that landed the Eagles in the
Superbowl. QB Donovan
McNabb,
RB Brian Westbrook,
Defensive End Jevon Kearse
and other NFL elite players
have the city of Philadelphia
optimistic again. Thank you
